Ram Dass tells a story of his stay one night, in a hotel room while on tour. Disgruntled with his surroundings, he began to wish for his tour to be over, so he could go home. He then realized that he was creating depression by longing to be somewhere other than where he was. He remarked to himself that he should feel at home everywhere in the universe, not just in one location. He said that home is “the quality of being wherever you are.”
If we believe that the world around us is truly generated from our own consciousness, then we must also own the power of that creation. Before I left for my trip to Nepal and Tibet in 2013, I stayed for a night at a luxury resort. As I stood in my room, made brilliant with large clusters of crystals, looking out on a view of the mountains, I realized that I would soon experience a huge contrast when I went to Asia, often sleeping on hard mattresses in simple accommodations (surprisingly comfortable, by the way), and using squat toilets or fields for relief during my travels. I had to acknowledge my ability to create dwelling places of every variety, and that all – at some point – became home for a time.
Pondering the ability we have to generate our surroundings, I got into a discussion with a dear friend of mine who has a beautiful home overlooking the Okanagan Valley. I asked her how she had come to create such a lovely dwelling place for herself. She told me that every day when she comes home, she stops to appreciate what she has created. In fact, she spends a lot of time in a state of appreciation for everything and everyone who has come into her life.
I realized that I need to acknowledge my ability to create contrast between opulent and austere surroundings, and the need to appreciate both extremes. If all of it is my creation, then I am always home. If I am always home, then there is no sense being dissatisfied with my creation – simply a need to accept that I created it, and I can change it once I understand the subconscious patterns that contributed to its materialization.
This also means that when I am in bountiful surroundings, I must own this creation and allow myself to fully embrace what is given to me by the universe, and my dear friends and family through whom the divine acts.
Wherever you fly, and wherever you land, please make yourself at home. That’s exactly where you are!
